Presentation

An overview of jSymbolic. Central concepts relating to digital symbolic music. Symbolic features and feature analysis. How can jSymbolic contribute to musicological research in general. Highlights of research work using jSymbolic. How can jSymbolic be expanded in order to meet specific project needs.

Open workshop

Installing and using jSymbolic. Analyzing and making use of features once they have been extracted using data mining tools, like Weka, and spreadsheets, such as Excel.

Note: Participants should bring their laptops.

Cory McKay is a Professor of Music and Humanities at Marianopolis College and a member of CIRMMT – Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (McGill University, Montréal, Canada). His research focuses on using statistical analysis and pattern recognition techniques to detect, analyze and make use of meaningful patterns in digital music scores (as part of the SIMSSA project) and on automatically mastering audio recordings (as a consultant for LANDR). He is also the primary designer of the jMIR multimodal software framework for performing music information retrieval (MIR) research.
