Biography

Luísa Cymbron earned all her academic training in Musicology from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she obtained her PhD in 1999, with a dissertation on Opera in Portugal during the Liberal Period (1834-1854). She is an Associate Professor at NOVA FCSH (Department of Musicology), since 2023 executive director of the Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music (CESEM), a member of the Caravelas group and the Opera Studies Research Cluster. She was reviews editor for the “Revista Portuguesa de Musicologia” between 2013 and 2022. Her main areas of interest are the history of music in 19th-century Portugal, Italian opera and the musical relations between Portugal and Brazil. She has published a large number of articles, both in Portugal and abroad, and has taken part in various research projects. She is currently co-principal investigator of the project “Magic Lantern: Study, Safeguard, Uses and Reuses in 19th-Century Portugal” (PER/1702/2021)”. She is the author of “História da Música Portuguesa” with Manuel Carlos de Brito (Universidade Aberta, 1992), “Olhares sobre a Música em Portugal no Século XIX” (Colibri- CESEM, 2012), and “Francisco de Sá Noronha (1820-1881): um músico português no espaço atlântico” (Humus-CESEM, 2019). She is co-coordinator of a volume on the old S. João Theatre in Porto (Edições Afrontamento, 2020) and editor/author of “Margarida Magalhães Sousa (1922-1993). Uma pianista açoriana” (mpmp 2022). She is also active as a promoter, in particular through commented concerts, mostly on the music of Portuguese and Brazilian composers.
