XVII Jornadas de Iconografía Musical I Participation of Sónia Duarte (CTC)

Sónia Duarte, a collaborator in the Research Group for the Study of Music, Critical Theory and Communication, will present a communication at the XVII Jornadas de Iconografía Musical. The conference will occur on 12 and 13 December at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

This communication ‘La música pintada por Vasco Pereira Lusitano (ca. 1536-1609): ‘corpus’ pictórico, diseño sonoro y construcción de una viola’ addresses the ‘corpus’ of paintings by Vasco Pereira Lusitano, with a focus on musical iconography, and disseminates the dialogue established between two luthiers from Caldas da Rainha – Orlando Trindade and José Silva – in the last two years. The project consisted of building a bow viola represented in a painting of Marian iconography, signed and dated by Vasco Pereira Lusitano in 1604, which is part of the collection of the Carlos Machado Museum in Ponta Delgada. Sónia Duarte will discuss the (re)discovery of the painting in 1973, analysing its iconography and ending with the sound of the constructed viola.
