The purpose of this meeting is to interrogate how the other arts perceive, imagine or hallucinate music. We will lend our ears to these other ways of listening, which are at work in literature, cinema and the visual arts, to ponder how they challenge our perception of music’s power and value. How should we interpret the fact that the influence of music has been either praised or feared by the other arts? What motivates these perceptions? Do they reinforce or dismantle the dichotomies between time and space, interiority and exteriority, subject and object, material and spiritual, smoothness and harshness that are so often associated with music? What does all this tell us not only about music but also about the obsessions and aspirations of the other arts?
