Biography

Studied double bass at Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa and at Academia de Amadores de Música. Has divided his career between practical music, teaching and research (especially in Musical Iconography). Graduated in Musicology by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities / NOVA University and took his Master degree on Art History at the same university, with the dissertation “Musical Iconography in Portuguese Medieval Art”; recently, finished his PhD in the same field of study. Researchers in CESEM (Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music) and Institute for Medieval Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He has been working on projects inserted in the field of medieval iconography, especially music iconography, being a founding member of the Study Group for Musical Iconography of the International Musicology Society, created in June of 2006. In the latest years, his work has been mainly focused in the field of medieval illumination, having completed a post-doctoral project on the study of portable Bibles of the 13th century, existing in Portuguese libraries and archives.
